The original inhabitants of the Churchill area were the Pre-Dorset and the Dorset people but by 1000 AD, Thule people arrived from the Western Arctic and the Dorset people left the area. The Thule people survived by hunting marine animals with harpoons. What we know today as being the Inuit culture evolved from the Thule people. Dene arrived in the northern part of Manitoba from the west in about 500 AD. These people lived in the center part of the area, where they made caribou their main food source. The economic and politics formed by these people was adopted by the fur trade business when the Europeans later arrived in the area.
