Churchill, ManitobaWith Churchill located on the edge of the Arctic, it creates the prime tourist destination. It is not unusual to see polar bears everywhere, that includes both in real life form, and on souvenir and in picture form, all over the town. Due to Churchill's being set in the wilderness, inhabitants of the town must rely on basic life skills to survive.
History of the TownArchaeologists have discovered evidence of humans in existence in the area that date back over 4000 years. It can be believed that the Churchill area was hunting ground for thousands of years because of the findings of old kayaks and tent rings from the Inuit peoples that used to inhabit the area. The Hudson Bay Co. that was established in 1670, is only 250 kilometers east of Churchill, and the company was controlled the fur trade from Churchill for many decades. Churchill grew from it's original outpost, to it's busy seaport, with help from the construction of the Hudson Bay railroad in the 1920's. Throughout the 1950's and the 1960's the town was a busy military community. Despite all of this, Churchill officially became a town in 1997.
